Your Thoughts Create Your Future (& you can control them)If you have set out in 2019 to get different results in your healthcare practice from those you achieved last year, you need to read/watch this blog post, because just trying to do things differently is not going to be enough to give you lasting change in your practice.

Different Outcomes Require Different Actions

There is a famous quote (although no one is sure who said it) that goes something like:

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”

So if 2019 is the year you want to get different results, you know you need to start doing things differently, i.e. taking different actions.

Sounds simple, but in reality previous New Year’s resolutions have probably taught you that just having the intention to change your actions is not really likely to yield you any long term gains. Again, there is a popular quote that says:

“80% of New Years resolutions fail by February”

 I’m not sure about who said it or the robustness of that data, but frankly it doesn’t matter (this blog is not about improving clinical care). What matters is understanding that effort alone is unlikely to yield meaningful long term change. The reason is because your behaviour i.e. your habits or your actions, are driven by your thoughts. So if you don’t first address your underlying thought patterns about a certain outcome like losing weight, you are more than likely going to end up back at square one with 8 kilos to shift all over again.

 

Thoughts Trigger Your Behaviour

Your thoughts are spinning through your head at an incredible rate every single day. I did a search but there was no real strong science behind any of the numbers but people claim we have somewhere in the range of 50,000 to 70,000 thoughts per day. To be honest I don’t really care what the exact number is, what I know is we each have A LOT of thoughts passing through our conscious and subconscious mind every single day.

Many of the thoughts we have create an emotional response in our bodies, be that fear, excitement, anticipation, concern or sadness.

Did you know that we can’t have an emotional reaction before first having an associated thought to trigger the emotion?

Anyway I digress. It is then our emotions, triggered by our thoughts, that drive our habits & our actions. Without us physically taking those actions we are never going to achieve any results in life, be that to lose weight, find a partner, grow our businesses, run a marathon or have a family. The thoughts and emotions on their own will not get you the results you desire. Your actions have got to mirror those desired outcomes. Thinking about wanting to lose weight & the excitement that might come with that thought are worthless if your associated actions are to sit on the sofa and eat doh-nuts.

Understanding all of this is going to be key if you are indeed going to get different results this year.
